So you think you can’t dance? Then you are encouraged to join us for our new Sunday Sessions of Polynesian Arts and Crafts, where we turn our dance floor into an art studio and you learn how to make “all things Polynesian”! Our first class will teach you how to make (one and possibly two) beautiful “Three Straw Flat Yarn Lei” at the Te Hau Nui Studio with special guest and dancer Katy Foster from 1-4pm. These lei are simple to make and functional both as adornments and as gifts! All materials are provided ($10 material fee). The cost is $35 and registration must be made by January 15; seating is limited and classes fill up fast. Please email to register.
Our treasured hula Master Loea Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett (Te Hau Nui School’s lineage) of Kaneohe O’ahu will be conducting a three day hula workshop in Santa Cruz! This is a special opportunity for dancers with previous hula dance experience to study with this master hula dancer, chanter, choreographer and composer! There will also be a public lecture on Friday. Please contact Kumu Mehana Thomas for cost and more information.
Learn how to make maori poi ball that will last you years. Te Hau Nui director, Kumu Lorraine Kaleiokalaua’e Kinnamon has made her own poi balls since the age of 15 and continues to share the tradition with her huamana or students. This class is open to the public and is an unusual opportunity to learn to make poi balls. As well as being used as traditional maori dance implements from New Zealand, poi balls make great gifts. Materials and refreshments are provided. The cost is $35 and registration must be made by February 15 – seating is limited and classes fill up fast. Please email to register.
The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, even at a seasoned 53 years old itself, is all about the new—the here and now of contemporary works for orchestra. Te Hau Nui has been invited to perform again this year! Please join in the festival fun and come support our Halau!

Inspire your child to play ukulele by making a shoebox “uke” in celebration of the short film “LAVA”! For ages 4 & up. Bring a friend or sibling for just $5!
Our lei workshop sold out last time, so register early to make your festive leis for unique holiday gifts! Choose from a green and red lei or Te Hau Nui colors (fuchsia and green) to make these easy but elegant leis. Registration required and all materials are provided. You will have enough to make at least two leis!

Have you saved the date for our fundraiser Anniversary Ho’ike? You don’t want to miss out on another “Magical Day” that Te Hau Nui will be presenting! The lovely dancers of Te Hau Nui, the beautiful sounds of Ho’omana Hawaiian Band, Tracy Parker and Patti Maxine, and an original Tahitian Otea performed to live tahitian drumming – a truly spiritual event we want to share with you! There will be a silent auction, island crafts and refreshments. Regular reserved tickets are $25* and Gold Star Circles tickets are $65*. Reserved seating tickets for Gold Star Circle will include the best seats in the house and a champagne reception and picture taking with dancers following the performance.
